Microscope?..High-Dry lens and viewing distance of about 1cm?

A student has the high-dry lens in position and appears tobe intently observing the specimen. The instructor, noting a working distance of about 1cm, knos the student isn’t actually seeing the specimen. How so?

For a lens to magnify, the object has to be as close to the focal length of the lens as possible. Microscope objectives have very short focal lengths and therefore short working distances (the distance from the front of the lens to the object).
